May 1-20, 2012: Early Season Hebgen Fishing Contest

For Mothers and Fathers who love to fish! Starting on the Saturday of Mother's Day through Father's Day, bring your biggest fish caught from Hebgen Lake to Kirkwood Resort to enter the contest. Enter each time you catch a bigger fish during the contest timeframe. Prizes awarded on Father's Day, along with special prizes for fish caught that day.

May 2012:  Memorial Day Services

Each year our community honors those who have served our country in the armed services. Those who have bought peace through sacrifice. “In Flanders fields the poppies grow, betwixt the crosses, row on row…” We remember. Service is held at the Fir Ridge Cemetery at 11:00am, 9 miles north of West Yellowstone on US 191.

The West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation (WYSEF) will host a Mountain Bike Biathlon on the Rendezvous Ski Trails.  This unique event combines mountain biking and target shooting. BYO-Bike and Helmet, rifles provided. Safety clinic included. 

Spectators are encouraged to attend either day and there is no charge to use the Rendezvous Ski trails during the summer months.  Volunteers are needed.  Anyone interested in helping out should visit www.rendezvousskitrails.com

The Island Park Library Friends, Inc. 11th annual Arts and Crafts Fair with entertainment is Friday and Saturday, July 6 and 7, 2011 at Buffalo Run RV Park, 3402 N. Hwy 20, Island Park, Idaho, approximately 30 miles south of West Yellowstone. Fair hours are 10am - 6pm daily. Musicians perform 2-6 pm daily; children's hour 1-2 pm daily. During this two-day event, artists and crafters offer a variety of unique handmade items, including wood carvings, metal work, photography, jewelry, Indian art work, and quilts. September 22, 2012: West Yellowstone Old Faithful Cycle Tour

What a terrific way to wind down a summer of riding and a unique way to experience Yellowstone National Park.  Fall is a gorgeous time to be in the Park the elk are bugling, the aspens have turned to gold, and the nearly crowd-free thermal areas continue to beckon the explorer. The supported ride is sixty miles round trip, with options available for one way travel. Cyclists in the tour can take advantage of two feed stations, three sag wagons, on-course bike mechanics, and end the day with a group meal.  The tour is limited by the National Park Service to the first 350 riders that complete the online registration. The National Park Service has waived admission fees to all national parks on 17 selected dates throughout 2011 and encourages all Americans to visit a national park this year.

Drop off non-motorized winter items at the trailhead on Friday from 4-7pm. Sale starts Saturday from 8am to noon. Get new-to-you winter gear at bargain basement prices. Pick up unsold items or your check on Saturday from 12-1pm, 30% of the sale price is donated to WYSEF. Come hungery, the Ski Team will host their annual bake sale on Saturday as well.

Ice-skates of all sizes can be donated for the Chamber's Skating and S'mores nights.

November 2012: Community Help Fund Benefit

The GREAT West Yellowstone Chili Cookoff and Pie Auction Povah Center 12:30 - 3:00 PM. Chilli cookoff begins at 12:30 pm. Silent pie auction every 30 minutes, 2:00 Live pie auction begins and 3:00 Chili cookoff winner will be announced. All afternoon: please bring non-perishable items for the local food bank and enter to win tickets for two on Allegiant Airlines! Chili Cookoff cost: Adults $5, Children 10 & under $2, Lemonade, coffee, cookies .50 each.

November 2012: The Yellowstone Ski Festival

This is a must for every cross-country skier! West Yellowstone literally comes alive in lycra in November. Hundreds of Nordic ski enthusiasts from all over the world, novice to expert, gather to learn more about the sport, practice techniques and see new equipment. Early snows, superb grooming, racing opportunities and the Nordic Skiing Exposition make this an especially inviting time. On-snow clinics take place between November 24-28. SuperTour Ski Races are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

The yips of eager dogs will pierce the winter mornings as mushers prepare for the return of Sled Dog Races to West Yellowstone. Meet the mushers and their canine athletes on Thursday evening during the Holiday Stroll in front of Wild West Pizzeria from 6:00-7:00pm Paws will pound across the Old Airport as sleds and mushers head off down the trail on Friday and Saturday. Races begin each day at 9:00 AM (12 dog teams, followed by 8 dog teams, followed by 6 dog teams) and 1:00 PM (Junior Race – 4 dog teams, 5 miles). Make sure to come before the races start to watch the teams harness up. . A portion of the proceeds from this year's races will benefit the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Bozeman, Montana.

Yellowstone National Park is waving admission fees this weekend in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr., federal holiday.
No matter how you choose enter the park - by car, RV, bus, or on a guided snowmobile or snowcoach trip – the entrance fee to the park will be waived.
Access to the interior of Yellowstone during the winter months is restricted to guided snowmobile and snowcoach trips from the North, West, South, and East entrances.   At Old Faithful, the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins and the dining room; the Geyser Grill; the Bear Den Gift Shop; and the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center are all open for the winter season.

March 3, 2012: Yellowstone Rendezvous Ski Race

With the blast of a black powder canon, racers sprint out to compete in a variety of age classes and distances in both classic and freestyle of 5 to 50K lengths. Hundreds of skiers come from across the nation to participate (typically 600-900). The 50 kilometers is over 31 miles and races make two laps on the outmost trails of the Rendezvous system. Five feed stations are located along the course and staffed with local groups and volunteers. Cash prizes are awarded but to many skiers, just finishing is the prize!

The Youth Ski Festival was created to encourage families to
stay the whole weekend of the Rendezvous Race. This event is a fun way
to wind down after the big race. All kids aged 13 years and younger are

race, an obstacle course, musical chairs, and a sprint. Parents are
encouraged to cheer on all the little skiers.

March 2013: Biathlon National Championships and US National Championships for Adaptive Biathlon

Many of us can ski.  Some of us can shoot a rifle.  FEW can ski AND shoot and among those are an elite group of athletes who will be in West Yellowstone to determine who will be the National Champion in each of several categories.  Races include sprint, pursuit, mass start, adaptive sprint and individual.    All competition will begin and end at the Biathlon Cabin immediately across from the Biathlon Range. Thursday, March 15th - 10:00 am: Sprint Start with an expected end time of 11:30 am Friday, March 16th - 9:30 am: Adaptive Individual Start with an expected end time of 10:00 am
Saturday, March 17th - 10:00 am: Pursuit race for all International Biathlon Union classes with an expected completion time 11:300 pm
Sunday, March 18th - 10:00 am: Mass Start with an expected completion time of 11:30 am.

A terrific end and beginning for snowmobilers!  The World Snowmobile Expo culminates a year of Sno-Cross racing for many Rocky Mountain competitors with three days of racing thrills.  Snowmobile manufacturers and after-market companies strut their 2013 stuff at the exposition hall.  Nighttime activities include a “Funny-Money” Casino night and plenty of laughs.  Plan now to attend!

Today is the last full day for winter travel into Yellowstone. Yellowstone's west entrance will reopen to vehicle travel April 20, 2021, when regular vehicle travel begins from the West Entrance.

The goal is to have a lot of fun and also complete as many laps as you can in the 3 Hour, 6 Hour, 12 Hour or 24 Hour divisions.  Skiers can enter as a relay team of up to 8 members or as a soloist.  Choose your challenge!  Kids under 12 are welcome to enter the 24 Minute event, which is always a highlight. The weekend includes a Saturday evening potluck with beverages and an all night bonfire at the start/finish line.  How far can you go?

April 2013: Yellowstone "Cycle" Days

Ride in Yellowstone for free and before the Park is open to public automobiles or buses.  It’s a perfect way to spend a day.  From West Yellowstone you can ride to Madison Junction and then to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone or Mammoth Hot Springs (the road between Madison and Old Faithful remains closed to all until April 20).  Feet and Roller blades are welcome, too.

April 2013: West Yelloowstone' 3rd Annual Earth Day Celbration

Come join us for an Earth Day celebration! Activities include crafts games, face painting, story telling, presentations by Grizzly Wolf Discovery Center and the USFS, and hands-on activities for children of all ages. Activities are intended to educate, entertain and inspire youth, in the spirit of Earth Day.

April 2013: 3rd Annual Spring Dinner

"You do the Looking, while we do the Cooking!"

3rd annual free spring dinner offered by the West Yellowstone Baptist Church, 437 Yellowstone Avenue. Everyone (local and area residents, new employees, park visitors coming through on the first weekend  of Yellowstone traffic through the west entrance). Dinner includes: pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches, baked beans, oriental slaw, coleslaw, ice cream with toppings, iced tea, coffee, and water. The ice cream is being provided by the City Creamery, a Virginia City-based company offering home-made ice cream that entitle the title, "Sweetest in the Nation" by National Geographic!
