Yellowstone Fall Road Information

The west entrance located in West Yellowstone, Montana offers the shortest distance to Old Faithful and West Thumb, as well as the most direct route to the Yellowstone’s South Entrance and Grand Teton National Park.

The Yellowstone Airport (airport code WYS) is located just two miles north of West Yellowstone and operates seasonally from June 1st through September 30th. It is serviced by SkyWest Airlines, a Delta Connection. Car rentals, taxi and hotel shuttles are available.

Fall weather is unpredictable; roads may be closed temporarily by snow or other weather conditions. Snow tires or chains may be required. Road closures within Yellowstone Park begin in October or earlier depending on snow and weather conditions. These are important dates for planning any trip to Yellowstone:

  • October 12, 2010: 8 am—Roads close to the public at Tower Fall to Canyon Jct. over Dunraven Pass and Long Lake Gate via Beartooth Pass to the Montana Stateline. (GATES CLOSE AT 8 A.M.).

  • November 8, 2010: 8 am—all park roads closed to the public except from the North Entrance to Upper Mammoth Terrace, and Mammoth via Tower Junction to Northeast Entrance. Cooke City via Colter Pass to the Long Lake gate is not maintained for wheeled vehicle travel.

  • The section of the Beartooth Highway (Highway 212), between the junction of Highway 296 and Red Lodge, Montana, closes in winter on a schedule determined by amount of snowfall. Travel between Red Lodge and the Northeast Entrance is not possible on Highway 212 until it opens again in the spring.

  • From December 15th to March 15th, oversnow vehicle (snowcoach and snowmobile) winter access is available from the west entrance at West Yellowstone, Montana as well as the south and east entrances.

  • During the winter season, only two roads are plowed in Yellowstone Park for vehicle access: between the North Entrance and Cooke City, MT; and from Mammoth Hot Springs to the parking area at the Upper Terraces.

  • Yellowstone Park Road Construction Projects & Updates

  • Norris-Madison Gibbon Canyon Project
    The road from Tuff Cliff picnic area (just north of Madison Junction) to Artist Paint Pots (just south of Norris Junction) will have delays through October 20th, 2010. Traffic is now being piloted over the new bridge and through the new road alignment. No stopping. Area remains a construction zone. There are NO MORE NIGHTLY CLOSURES.

  • Yellowstone East Entrance Road (Sylvan Pass)  
    Contractors have begun working on a one mile section of the East Entrance road through Sylvan Pass.  Expect up to 30 minute traffic delays through the area until work concludes in the fall.  There will be no night time delays or closures, 6:30 PM Sept 2 through Sept.7, 7 AM

  • Mammoth Hot Springs Area (Pavement Preservation Project)
    Beginning after Labor Day and continuing through the end of October. Expect 30-minute delays and pilot vehicles.

  • Canyon Village Area (Pavement Preservation Project)
    South Rim Drive (Grand Loop Road to Artist Point), to start shortly after Labor Day.Sept. 7 through Sept. 17 CLOSED NIGHTLY Sept. 8-10, 8 PM-8 AM. CLOSED DAILY Sept. 13-16, noon-8 PM. During the day,Expect 30-minute delays and pilot vehicles.

  • Northeast Entrance (Lamar Bridge)
    Construction is scheduled to begin after Labor Day. Expect 30-minue delays.

  • Beartooth Highway U.S. 212 (NE of Yellowstone)
    Milepost 25–43.1 (state line)—Open with possible 30 minute delays except holidays.Beartooth Highway construction updates are available at (888) 285-4636.

  • Grand Teton National Park Road Construction Projects & Updates

  • Pacific Creek Road
    Pacific Creek Road including access to Two Ocean Lake and Bridger-Teton National Forest daytime closures 9 a.m.-3 p.m. south of Two Ocean Lake Road, late September-mid-November.

  • Bridge Maintenance:
    Maintenance work will be occurring on various bridges throughout the park. Expect intermittent 15 minute delays. Pacific Creek Road including access to Bridger-Teton National Forest will also have 15 minute delays.

  • The Teton Park Road from Taggart Lake Trailhead to Signal Mountain and the Moose-Wilson Road from the Death Canyon Trailhead to the Granite Canyon Trailhead are closed to motor vehicles from November 1st through April 30th. The Antelope Flats Road and Signal Mountain Road are also closed during this period.

  • Montana Road Construction Updates

  • Interstate 90bridge work at Anaconda interchange, Alberton, Bearmouth, Bridgetown, Clinton, St. Regis, Superior, and Warm Springs.

  • Interstate 90 Bozeman area reconstruction work with width limitations.

  • Interstate 94 bridge work at Custer interchange and from the MT-39 junction to the North Dakota border. Other reconstruction projects in Terry and Glendive areas.

  • Interstate 15 reconstruction work at Butte interchange, Helena interchange, Stickney Creek to Hardy Creek. Some detours in place until November 10, 2010.

  • Interstate 15 bridge work underway at Ulm, Conrad, and Great Falls, MT.
